Gubbio

01.01.2024 - 31.12.2024

Sixty-six million years ago, a comet the size of a mountain crashes to Earth, triggering a series of catastrophic events that wipe out 75% of all life forms. The gigantic non-avian dinosaurs that had dominated the Mesozoic era, true icons of prehistory, also disappear forever. The rocky stratifications of the Bottaccione Gorge, in Gubbio, contain the story of this dramatic mass extinction, the most famous of those that have marked geological time: an emblematic story that offers us the opportunity to delve into a subject that is hotly debated in the scientific debate. The exhibition ‘Extinction: Before and After the Disappearance of the Dinosaurs’ tells the story of life on Earth through the traumatic events that marked it: the great mass extinctions. Spectacular life-size sculptures, fossils and casts are on display in the impressive Ex Monastery of St. Benedict, the ideal setting for a unique exhibition. Panels and multimedia content - such as Paco Lanciano's Quadrisphere - guide visitors along this fascinating journey. The jewel in the crown of the exhibition are the species discovered in Italy, in full: Scypionyx samniticus, Tethyshadros insularis, Tito and Saltriovenator. Ample space is also dedicated to the research conducted in our country and the behind the scenes: the work of the palaeontologist and palaeoartist to bring the rulers of a lost world back to life, between old bones and new technologies. The exhibition concludes with the great mammals of the Ice Age and a section on the timeless fascination of dinosaurs, icons of the collective imagination and absolute protagonists of Pop Culture, curated by Fabrizio Modina and realised in collaboration with Arcadia Arte.
