After June's challenge, the city of Foligno reopens its doors Sept. 16 and 17 to rediscover the Giostra della Quintana, dubbed the Olympics of Old Regime Games.  It is a unique and exciting challenge between the city's ten districts: riding his horse, the knight must ride a treacherous course, trying to get his lance into the ring hanging from the arm of the famous Quintana statue, representing the God Mars. The rider who finishes the course without penalty and in the shortest possible time wins the Palio. The 17th-century knightly tournament takes place on Saturday and Sunday, but festivities begin as early as two weeks earlier, with the opening of taverns, traveling shows and individual events.
