Isola Prossima - Aere

The fourth edition of the art exhibition at the Museo Civico di Palazzo della Penna, Perugia, to explore contemporary art and its connections with the element of air

Perugia

25.09.2024 - 01.12.2024

From Thursday 25 September to Sunday 1 December 2024, the 4th edition of the art exhibition ‘Isola Prossima’ will be held at the Museo Civico di Palazzo della Penna in Perugia. It will be a unique opportunity to explore contemporary art and its connections with the element of air.  The exhibition, curated by Massimo Mattioli, brings together the works of 25 internationally renowned artists and offers an exhibition itinerary that intertwines with the works of the great Gerardo Dottori, master of Aeropittura. ‘Aere’ is the central theme, with works ranging from the Renaissance to the present day, exploring air as a source of artistic inspiration, and addressing current issues such as pollution and climate change. Ideally opening the exhibition will be a gouache by renowned Neapolitan landscape artist Giacinto Gigante, depicting a study for a cloud. To underline the artists' attention to the ethical aspects of air, there will then be some large canvases by Luca Vitone, left to the whim of atmospheric agents, air, rain, dust and other organic elements, which “paint” these fascinating paintings. Another artist enriching the exhibition will be the Indian Shilpa Gupta, with two works focusing on pollution and the metaphysical value of the atmosphere.  In some of the artists present in the exhibition, air finds a function in the context of technological projects: as in Mariateresa Sartori, who presents a series of drawings ‘realised’ by a pen animated by an anemometer, and Donato Piccolo, who in hypertechnological showcases manages to recreate hurricanes, storms and tornadoes in vitro. While Arcangelo Sassolino involves the air contained in a tyre in his eternal challenge to the limits of the elements, which triggers powerful and disturbing feelings of expectation and fear.  There are also artists who are more sensitive to the lyrical aspects of the atmospheric elements: such as Edoardo Cialfi, whose sensual landscapes are always marked by the mystery of the unpredictability of the ethereal element. Or the Dutchman Casper Faassen, who entrusts the plastic rendering of atmospheric sensations to the dialogue between photography and painting, in superimposed layers. The opening hours observed will be as follows: September and October: 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; November and December: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; closed on Mondays.
