Truffle hunting and extraction

A traditional practice recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

This traditional Italian practice was declared UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021, a recognition that celebrates truffles not only as a gastronomic delicacy but as a rich cultural heritage of knowledge, skills, techniques and practices tied to the truffle hunter’s craft.

In Umbria, this activity is widespread across the region: truffle towns, from the Upper Tiber Valley to the Valnerina, are famous for their prized truffles, including black and white truffles.

Truffle hunting and extraction is much more than just a search: it is an oral and social heritage of stories, anecdotes and knowledge deeply connected to the land.
Every year, festivals and fairs celebrate truffles and the exquisite traditional dishes made with them, strengthening the community spirit and preserving a tradition that is passed down through generations while respecting the environmental balance and biodiversity of our territory.
