The trail winds its way through the cool and peaceful beech forest of Val di Ranco, descending to the Croce dei Fossi (the place where, in popular tradition, the meeting between witches and the devil takes place on the night of St John). We then climb the pleasant Valle di San Pietro and the stream of the same name in a natural spectacle of waterfalls and pools of water. This stream, which originates just upstream, is the initial source of the Rio Freddo, which originates at the contact between the maiolica limestone (permeable) and the flint layers (impermeable). Leeches and trichoptera abundantly populate the clear waters. The valley owes its name to the presence of a hermitage (San Pietro Orticheto) of which no traces remain today. On the highest part of the valley, a wide clearing opens up with meadows with typical spring-summer blooms, and in the clearings amidst the surrounding mountain peaks, hawks fly high in an environment of pristine beauty. From here, we continue towards what is known as the 'Passo Cattivo' (Bad Pass), the route representing the ancient connection between Umbria and Le Marche, as well as between the villages on the valley floor and the mountains. While above dominate the majestic majolica walls of Monte Culumeo. The narrow path begins to descend quite steeply at an altitude of 1004 m, and then climbs up again to the northern take-off point of the hang-gliders, to descend again along the carriage road to the starting point.
