palio dei colombi - knight on horseback

Palio dei Colombi 2024

The Palio dei Colombi will be held in Amelia from 20 July to 11 August 2024.
The re-enactment will propose the reconstruction of the life of the city of Amelia starting from the study of the Statutes of the People published in 1346. The settings proposed, the historical costumes, the trials faced by the knights, are all constructed with reference to the era of those Statutes.

The city of Amelia is divided into five 'contrade', thus named: Collis, Crux Burgi, Platea, Posterola and Vallis, each with its own seat where, throughout the year, it promotes various cultural and social initiatives. The activities that take place during the twenty days of festivities are numerous.
The first of them is the delivery and reading of the proclamation, which will take place on Saturday 20 July 2024, during which the Announcement of the Challenge between the contrade is issued. After the reading, the Banquet of the Challenge is organised during which the prize for the winners is presented.
These two activities are followed by the Investiture and Blessing of the knight, crossbowman and horse that will compete for each contrada, in the presence of the most important figures of each, including the prior, the guard, the gonfalonier and a priest.
During the Historical Procession, organised on the evening of Saturday 10 August 2024, the political, administrative, religious and town representatives of 1346 parade. The procession consists of: Officiales escorting the Podestà, contrade Collis, Crux Burgi, Platea, Posterola, Vallis and numerous costumants. Each contrada leaves its seat to reach the meeting point in Piazza Matteotti and they take part in parade order according to the arrival ranking of the Palio of the previous edition. After making their way along the route, the participants in the procession line up on the steps to watch the competition, following the flag-wavers' performance and the awarding of prizes for all competing contests throughout the event.
The Palio dei Colombi consists of two simultaneous competitions: horsemen and crossbowmen. Two horses compete at the same time in a direct confrontation on an oval course, starting at the stalls and finishing at the opposite side of the course, where one has to hit the saracen before the opponent. At the end of each round, the crossbowmen of the competing districts shoot at the target and, only if they hit the target, trigger a mechanism that opens the cage where there is a white dove flying away. In the crossbowmen's clash, one point is added to the best of each round.
The winner is the one who scores the most points by adding up those of the knight and crossbowman of each contrada.
