Celebration of St. Antony Abbot

Celebration of St. Antony Abbot

The celebration of St. Antony Abbot, the protector of animals, will be held all over Italy on 17th January: in Umbria celebrations in honour of the Saint are particularly felt and are taking place in different cities.

In Perugia, along Borgo St. Antony and Porta Pesa, on 13rd January there will be a day rich of initiatives and appointments such as visits, concerts, laboratories, market-exhibitions and exhibitions that will close the festival "The village in the winter", a series of events devoted to Christmas.

In Santa Maria degli Angeli, instead, the cult of St. Antony has its roots in the tradition of the "St. Antony dish": around 1860, the horses' stagecoaches that travelled regularly along the Florence-Rome itinerary, started to get ill. The population invoked St. Antony's help and when the epidemy ceased, they decided to pay a tribute to the Saint with the distribution of a dish to poor people, the "St. Antony's Dish". This year celebrations in honour of the Saint are scheduled from January 7 to 21 with conferences, historical reenactments, parades, music, food and wine, exhibitions and much more.

St.Antony is one of the most loved and revered saints in the Valnerina's villages: a lot of events will be organized in honour of the Saint. In Cascia, particularly, celebrations anticipate "Tradition what a passion: Celebration of the mountain's rural traditions". From 17th to 20th January Saint Rita's city will step back in time, going back to the rural culture and the past popular habits. Tastings frame the appointment with the Interregional Festival of Pasquarelle, one of the most ancient and important events of Valnerina's popular music.
