Attracted by the lively cultural climate of Spoleto's Festival of Two Worlds, in the summer of 1971, American artist Sol LeWitt accepted an invitation from gallery owner Marilena Bonomo. It was love at first sight, so much so that shortly afterwards he bought a house in the historic centre where he settled for a long time and where he maintained, for about 30 years, a permanent studio. Here he assimilated local culture with ferments of internationality and contributed to the growth of the city. The intense relationship is also evidenced by the presence of numerous works made from 1971 until after 2000, including a beautiful book that recounts, with polaroid shots, his walks in the sacred forest of Monteluco (From Monteluco to Spoleto).

A few steps from the ancient Springs of Clitunno, the monumental structure La Torre, dedicated to his friend Giulio Laureti, stands alone in La Bianca Gardens.

The project (a kind of ziggurat), which was inspired by New York skyscrapers of the 1960s, dates from 2000. The work, made of concrete blocks, was completed in 2003, becoming one of the symbols of the artist's sincere and deep affection for Umbria as well as a contemporary architectural masterpiece.
