LA TORRE di Sol LeWitt a Campello sul Clitunno

Attracted by the lively cultural climate of Spoleto's Festival of Two Worlds, in the summer of 1971, American artist Sol LeWitt accepted an invitation from gallery owner Marilena Bonomo. It was love at first sight, so much so that shortly afterwards he bought a house in the historic centre where he settled for a long time and where he maintained, for about 30 years, a permanent studio. Here he assimilated local culture with ferments of internationality and contributed to the growth of the city. The intense relationship is also evidenced by the presence of numerous works made from 1971 until after 2000, including a beautiful book that recounts, with polaroid shots, his walks in the sacred forest of Monteluco (From Monteluco to Spoleto).

A few steps from the ancient Springs of Clitunno, the monumental structure La Torre, dedicated to his friend Giulio Laureti, stands alone in La Bianca Gardens.

The project (a kind of ziggurat), which was inspired by New York skyscrapers of the 1960s, dates from 2000. The work, made of concrete blocks, was completed in 2003, becoming one of the symbols of the artist's sincere and deep affection for Umbria as well as a contemporary architectural masterpiece.

During his time in Umbria, Sol LeWitt learned about local artistic traditions, discovering and studying typical craft techniques such as ceramics and woodworking, which led to a substantial production of artifacts in Deruta and the series of projects for the Wooden Pyramids made in Spoleto.

Since his death in 2007 in New York, the composite group of works as a gift to the city of Spoleto, such as the masterpiece Wall Drawings 951 at the Palazzo Collicola Museum and the Wall in the Viale Mariotti Gardens, remain visible and open to the public, recalling his indissoluble and inspiring relationship with Umbria.

LeWitt's family wanted to leave a legacy of the artist in Spoleto, and founded, together with the daughter of sculptor AnnaMahler (the daughter of the great musician) who loved the city, an art residency program that has become an important creative centre.
