Torre dei Lambardi - Magione

When visiting Magione, a stop at Torre dei Lambardi (Lambardi Tower), or Torre dei Lombardi, is a must. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it is easily accessible on foot from the center of the town and is set in a beautiful park. The tower stands approximately 30 meters high and has a quadrangular shape. Its internal structure is divided into three floors and two half-floors, with a terrace at the top offering a stunning panoramic view.

In the past, it was a highly significant strategic point and was at the center of violent battles during the late medieval period. It was likely a formidable fortress, favored by its height and a bastion-shaped base.

Originally built by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (the present-day Sovereign Military Order of Malta), it played a crucial role in either guaranteeing or blocking the flow of food supplies destined for Perugia, particularly fish from the northern shore of Lake Trasimeno.

The tower’s original interior was likely structured with three stone floors and three wooden ones, connected by a spiral staircase, of which only a small part remains in the upper section. Externally, it was equipped with a moat and a stone bridge (now buried), which allowed the passage of only one person at a time.

The origin of its name is uncertain: in the late Middle Ages, the term “lambardi” (later “lombardi”) was used generically to refer to the nobility of rural communities (in this case, the same Knights of St. John). However, some believe that the fortress took on this name after June 4, 1688, in memory of the murder of Marcello Lombardi, which took place near the building.

Entrance: free admission for people with disabilities and their companions.

For large groups, booking is recommended.

How to reach the property:

It is possible to reach the Tower by car and park in the area in front of the entrance. The parking spaces are not marked, and the external ground is mostly flat with a dirt and gravel ground. The entrance to the tower is surrounded by a perimeter brick walkway adjacent to the area.

Moving around the facility:

The Tower consists of six levels: the ground floor with level entrance, four intermediate floors served by an elevator, and a rooftop terrace accessible only by a spiral staircase. Therefore, from the entrance to the fourth floor, vertical connections are provided by level landings, a ramp, and an elevator. On the ground floor, there are a ticket office and a restroom; the first to the fourth floors are used for exhibitions, while the terrace serves as a panoramic viewpoint.
The entrance to the Tower is at the level of the external walkway, with a door wider than 75 cm. Past the entrance, before reaching the ticket office, there is a short ramp (50 cm long with a 13% incline) made of the same material as the surrounding pavement.
Near the entrance, there is an elevator (cabin 125 cm deep, 78 cm wide, and door 74 cm wide, located on the short side). The staircase connecting the upper four levels has a non-continuous handrail, present only in some sections and on one side. It also features some lateral and vertical narrowings due to the site’s characteristics, which are not marked. Access to the upper terrace is via a spiral staircase with a handrail on one side.
The room on the first level can be used for weddings or events and is set up differently depending on its use.

Use of contents:

Inside the building, there are several descriptive panels, display cases, an information totem (at the entrance), and an interactive table for temporary exhibitions (second floor), both equipped with touch-screen systems.
The glass display cases allow the viewing of certain artifacts and, due to their design, may be accessible to wheelchair users.
On the first floor, in the room designated for ceremonies and events, there is a panel with buttons of different colors that can activate films with impressive audio and video effects projected onto the Tower's interior walls. There are also various seating options available for visitors to comfortably watch the videos. The film projection panel is also present on the second floor.

Toilet features:

The restroom is located on the ground floor. It is a unisex facility for all visitors, and is accessible to people with disabilities. Before the restroom, there is a small anteroom.
Inside the restroom, there is a foldable bar on the right side of the toilet; the available space allows for lateral or diagonal access to the toilet by wheelchair users.
