Perugia, the main town of the region, is a city that dominates the surrounding valleys from the hillside. Founded by the Etruscans, it became Roman before undergoing several conquests. Perugia became municipality in 1139, extended its sphere of influence in that period and experienced an impressive urban development that lasted until about the middle of the fourteenth century.

Once it became part of the papal dominion, it became part of the national territory in 1860. Today it preserves an extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage from this varied past.
The denomination of origin of the Perugia Hills includes the southernmost part of the Perugia municipality and some of its surrounding areas. It is an area with a particularly favourable climate and exposure to viticulture (there is evidence of the wine-growing activity that began with the ancient Etruscans and continued with the Romans).
The controlled designation of origin "Perugia Hills" is reserved for white, red and novello wine as well as for spumante and vin santo or vino santo with reference to the following grape varieties:
