The Carnival of St. Eraclio
Carnival returns to Sant'Eraclio di Foligno on 28, 4 and 11 February 2024.
The carnival event is one of the oldest in Umbria and is traced back to 1542, when the Olivetan friars of Mormonzone opened the abandoned convent to the people to party in the streets as opposed to the festivities of the nobles that were celebrated in aristocratic palaces indoors.
It was a festival of dancing and singing, of flower-adorned floats parading through the streets accompanied by trumpets and fifes.
Since 1960, the organisation of the parade of floats and all other carnival events has been carried out by the association called the 'Carnevale dei Ragazzi'.
Once again this year, the Sant'Eraclio Carnival will offer all visitors wonderful parades of floats and masked groups through the streets of the town, together with exhibitions and shows.
Like every year, the Osteria del Carnevale (Carnival Tavern) will also be open at the Rione Badia tavern in Foligno to enjoy typical Umbrian cuisine.
