"L'età dell'oro" - Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria
From October 26, 2024, to January 19, 2025, the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia presents the exhibition "L'età dell'oro". The Golden Masterpieces of the National Gallery of Umbria Meet Contemporary Art.' Curated by Alessandra Mammì, Veruska Picchiarelli, and Carla Scagliosi, the exhibition, following a reduced preview at Ca’ d’Oro during the Venice Biennale, brings together 50 artworks.
The golden masterpieces from the National Gallery of Umbria, created by artists such as Duccio di Boninsegna, Gentile da Fabriano, and Taddeo di Bartolo, are juxtaposed with works by contemporary masters including Carla Accardi, Alberto Burri, and Andy Warhol. This dialogue between ancient and modern explores new interpretations and perspectives through the use of gold, a material that, although interpreted differently over time, retains profound symbolic value.
One of the most captivating moments of the exhibition is the comparison between the Montalto Reliquary, a piece of French goldsmithing from the 14th century, and Yves Klein's Ex-voto, dedicated to Saint Rita of Cascia. Gold, in its various meanings, is not merely an aesthetic choice but a symbol that transcends the sacred and the contemporary, maintaining its spiritual and symbolic power.
