“Che Dio ci aiuti”: a tour to discover the locations of the italian TV drama filmed in Assisi

A route in stages along the alleys of Assisi to relive the adventures of the well-known program

Who has never dreamed of visiting the places where their favorite TV series is set? On some occasions the set comes to life under the open sky, among nature reserves or along the alleys of a medieval town. This is precisely the case in Assisi, the protagonist of the sixth and seventh seasons of the famous Rai TV drama "Che Dio ci aiuti" (God Help Us), broadcast on Rai Uno.

Strolling through the streets of the city, one can recognize the historic buildings of Assisi that serve as the backdrop for the adventures of the likeable Sister Angela, the main character of the story, who drives her blue minibus through the city's historic center. These places, including -for example- the corner with the aedicule of the Madonnina a Piaggia, have become the stops of an original themed tour proposed by the city of Assisi.

THE BASILICA OF SAN FRANCESCO
THE BASILICA OF SAN FRANCESCO

Serving as the backdrop for many scenes in the TV series, shot from a terrace, is the unforgettable papal Basilica of St. Francis. The foundation stone for the building was laid in 1228, two years after the death of St. Francis, who was buried in the crypt of the lower church. In 1253 the Saint's basilica was finished and today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church is known for the extraordinary cycle of frescoes inside the upper basilica, dedicated to the stories of the Saint, attributed to the workshop of Giotto. Beyond Giotto are the most important Italian painters at the turn of the 1200s and 1300s: Cimabue, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti, to name a few.A sight for the observer is the white of its exterior structure, built with a particular stone from Mount Subasio, contrasting with the clear blue of the sky and the green of the large garden in front. From the square outside the church, you can admire the panorama of the Umbrian valley surrounding Assisi.

(You can visit it freely during public opening hours).

THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN RUFINO
THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN RUFINO

Some scenes of the TV drama "Che Dio ci aiuti" were filmed inside the Cathedral of San Rufino: protagonists are the library, the rose window and the bell tower.
The building was first built in the 8th century and then rebuilt around the year 1000, in the Umbrian Romanesque style, but it is known as the place where St. Francis and St. Clare were baptized. It then underwent several renovations, interior and exterior, during the Renaissance. Although less well known than the basilica of St. Francis, the Cathedral of San Rufino is an important place of pilgrimage and well worth a visit, not only for its religious value, but also for its importance from the archaeological point of view: in fact, there are preserved artifacts dating back to Roman times. According to some reconstructions, the square would correspond to the ancient roman forum of the city.
(During opening hours the visit is free).
