The Trasimeno Cycle Route is a circular route around Lake Trasimeno, the fourth largest lake in Italy. It offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Umbrian territory: it will allow you to ride along the shores of the lake, and will also take you inland along the border of the Trasimeno Regional Park, to discover the most interesting villages of the Trasimeno area. This is one of the easiest, and at the same time most charming, routes for those who wish to discover this area of Umbria by bicycle.

The itinerary develops by alternating long stretches in its own roadway with neighbouring roads or dirt tracks with almost no traffic. The only points where it is necessary to return to the main road are at the towns of Passignano sul Trasimeno and San Feliciano (to avoid the road you can take advantage of the pavements) and on the Via Romea, before the intersection with the SR142. The only critical stretch (where care must be taken because there may be traffic) is the 400 metres at the “La Folaga sul Trasimeno” flats, before Sant’Arcangelo.

The route is completely flat and overall measures 58.2 km. It can be tackled with any type of bike, with the exception of racing bikes.

It can be cycled in both directions. Our advice is to cycle clockwise, so as to minimise crossings and make the experience more pleasant.

The route is signposted with brown tourist signs. We recommend that you also download the GPS track to consult on your phone or compatible cycle computer.

The attached track starts and ends in San Feliciano, but of course you can access the Trasimeno Cycle Route from any point around the lake.

The charming villages along the route:

1 - La Valle Natural Reserve and San Feliciano

La Valle Natural Reserve is located near the characteristic village of San Savino, a hamlet of Magione. Covering an area of 1,000 hectares within the Trasimeno Regional Park, this area of shallow waters and reeds is ideal for birdwatchers: head to one of the observatories on its nature trail to admire the more than 200 species of birds that pass through and populate the area every year. Another unmissable stop just a few kilometres from the La Valle Oasis is the village of San Feliciano, an authentic pearl of Lake Trasimeno. Walk along its characteristic pier during sunset, counted among the most sensational in the world, to witness an unprecedented light and colour show. From San Feliciano you can also board one of the ferries to Isola Polvese, the largest island on Lake Trasimeno.

2 - Castiglione del Lago

Located in the Trasimeno Regional Park and listed among the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy), the medieval town of Castiglione del Lago stands on a hilly promontory overlooking the shores of the lake. Its walls, which surround the historic centre, contain architectural masterpieces such as the imposing Rocca del Leone, from which you can admire a splendid panorama of the entire Lake Trasimeno area. Don’t miss the Palazzo della Corgna, which can be reached from the fortress along a walkway to discover its . 3 - Tuoro sul Trasimeno

Tuoro is known for being the site of the historic Battle of Trasimeno in 217 BC. To learn more about the events that led to the defeat of the Romans at the hands of the Carthaginians, visit the Hannibal Museum and immerse yourself in the thousand-year history of this fascinating location. Tuoro's territory also includes Isola Maggiore, which can be reached by ferry. This enchanting destination combines art, nature and tranquillity, charming visitors every year with its characteristic village and the frescoes of the L.

4 - Passignano

Picturesque town on the shores of the lake. Passignano, renowned for its characteristic lakeside promenade and equipped beaches, is ideal for a relaxing day out.

The jewel in the town's crown is its medieval Rocca, dominating the town and offering a breathtaking view. Climb the tower stairs to the terrace to enjoy a 360° view of Lake Trasimeno, its three islands - the Maggiore, Minore and Polvese - and the surrounding hills.

5 - Monte del Lago

This village, located between Torricella and San Feliciano, offers tranquillity and natural beauty. Worthy of note is the Church of St. Andrew with its fascinating frescoes. Near the village is also Albaia beach, where you can park your car or take a break at the bar.

USEFUL RECOMMENDATIONS

• The Trasimeno Cycle Route alternates between paved and unpaved stretches. The road surface is always good, but during heavy rain it is possible to find mud, especially between Castiglione del Lago and Borghetto.
• Ideal bicycles: all, with the exception of racing bikes. To explore the Trasimeno cycle route, you can also rent a bicycle at the rental points along the route.
• The Trasimeno ring can be cycled in both directions, but our advice is to tackle it clockwise.
• The route is mostly on its own road, but there are still a few kilometres on roads that require attention, especially for beginners or those travelling with children.

How to reach the cycle route:

By car:

- Autostrada del Sole (A1): exit “Valdichiana” for those coming from the north, exit “Fabro” and “Chiusi-Chianciano Terme” for those coming from the south.

- E45: exit “Perugia”, direction Lago Trasimeno.

By train:

- Direction Milan-Florence-Rome: Castiglione del Lago, Chiusi-Chianciano Terme or Terontola stations

- Direction Ancona-Foligno-Florence: Magione, Passignano sul Trasimeno or Tuoro sul Trasimeno stations
