Trebbiano Toscano (o Procanico)

Trebbiano Toscano (o Procanico)

The Trebbiano Toscano is a vine that belongs to the large Trebbiano family, one of the most popular white grape varieties in Italy. It is one of the oldest known vines and is mentioned in all the great works on wine, starting with Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia.

It is harder to trace the origins of its name, which may have come from the River Trebbia in Emilia, or from one of the various municipalities named Trebbio or Trebbo scattered around Italy.

This vine is commonly found all over Umbria, and is used in the production of a large number of white wines made in the provinces of Perugia and Terni. When vinified as a pure varietal, the Trebbiano Toscano yields a wine with a characteristically light aroma. Usually, and especially in the Orvieto area, it is used in blends in order to boost the alcohol content and acidity of white wines. The natural characteristics of this grape make it well-suited for the production of the traditional Vin Santo, particularly in the areas around Amelia, the hills of Perugia and Trasimeno, and Torgiano.
