The first description of this vine was given by Francolini in his "Bollettini Ampelografici" from 1878. What is certain, however, is that this vine is only grown in Umbria, its preferred soil. 

It is grown almost exclusively in a wide area ranging from Spoleto to Foligno and Montefalco in the province of Perugia. When vinified as a pure varietal, the Trebbiano Spoletino yields a wine with a fresh, rather fruity aroma, fairly alcoholic with a distinctive acidity.  This last characteristic makes it quite a good choice for the production of sparkling wines. Also used for blending, this grape has found its natural habitat in Spoleto, where it is vinified almost exclusively as a pure varietal.
